Yesterday in class we started with a creative writing activity associated with The Catcher in the Rye, this work cannot be made up. Then we took sometime to continue reading the novel. Finally we drafted a few test questions for the novel and traded questions to prepare for the unit test.

District Final Essay
Today, most of the time in both classes was dedicated to writing the essay portion of the district final.
In 2nd block, we also heard from one last group's grammar presentation. On Monday, we'll quiz over chapters 1-14 of The Catcher in the Rye and take our grammar quiz.
In 3rd block, we quizzed over chapters 1-9 of The Catcher in the Rye. On Monday we'll quiz over chapters 10-16 and also take our grammar quiz.

Essay Evaluation
In 2nd block today, we heard from and participated in another group's grammar presentations. Tomorrow we'll have our final group present. Afterward, we took some time to evaluate our classmates' practice essays that we wrote yesterday. Hopefully the feedback will be helpful tomorrow. We also took some time to read from The Catcher in the Rye.
In 3rd block, we wrote practice essays in preparation for the district final. We then evaluated each other's essays and gave some feedback. We also heard and participated in our final two groups' grammar presentations.
On Friday we'll start class with our reading quiz over the first nine chapters of The Catcher in the Rye (pages 1-66). Then we'll take our grammar quiz. Finally, we'll take the performance portion of our district final, that is, the essay.

A Raisin in the Sun Unit Test
Yesterday in class we had a substitute as I was out sick. We prepared for our unit test over A Raisin in the Sun. We finished reading the play and completed the Act III Study Questions and a Chronolog handout. Both of these handouts are available on the shelf at the front of the room. We also completed a Latin Vocabulary Roots Crossword.
Today in class we took our Raisin in the Sun unit test, which also covered Latin vocabulary roots. If you were absent, please plan on coming in early or staying after school sometime next week to take the test.

Latin Vocabulary Roots
Today's bellwork is here. Today, we began to transition into A Raisin in the Sun. We discussed different needs and how they fit into Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Rough Drafts and Peer Reviews
Yesterday (Tuesday, November 2nd) we spent our time in the library working on rough drafts for our research papers.
Today those rough drafts were due. We then traded our rough drafts to get feedback on them from our classmates. After completing a couple of peer reviews, we went to the library where we began to work on our final drafts. If you were absent today, you do not need to make up the peer reviews, but please note that a final draft of your research paper is due on Monday, November 8th.

In-Text Citations and Outlines
Today in class we went over the formatting for in-text citations. If you were absent, you will not need to make this up, but you should check this website and become familiar with the proper format for in-text citations as you will be graded over it on your research paper. We also worked on a web organizer for our papers. From that web organizer, we chose four topics for our body paragraphs and began filling out the following outline for our research papers. The outline is due at the beginning of class tomorrow and a rough draft of our paper will be due Wednesday at the beginning of class.

Annotated Bibliography
Today we spent most of the class period working on proper MLA-style entries on a works cited page. The work does not need to be made up, but please spend some time on this website getting familiar with the proper citations for MLA style papers. After this practice, we began our work on our annotated bibliography assignment. Five notecards (each representing five different sources) are due to me by the end of class tomorrow. We will spend the entire class period tomorrow working on this assignment.

Rip Notes and Databases
Today in class we continued our work on our RIP notes and turned them in at the end of class. If you were not here or did not finish, that's fine, but please get them to me as soon as possible. There is a lot to do for this research unit and I want to avoid having people get behind. We focused on accessing databases today as well, so that we could find periodical sources for our RIP notes. Tomorrow we'll moved on to our work on annotated bibliographies.

Today we started class by writing a short entry for a student publication entitled, What I've Learned So Far. The entries are for points, so make sure you get a copy of the entry sheet from the shelf at the front of the room, complete it and turn it in. The Crucible Review and The Village
Today's bellwork is here. It requires that you first read the article, The Crucible: Fact vs. Fiction. Afterward, we reviewed for the vocabulary portion of our test with this Vocabulary Review handout. The test will only cover the 19 words from the review; don't worry about words that were not on the review sheet. Finally, we watched some of The Village, making connections between it and The Crucible.
Remember our unit test is tomorrow. It will cover characters (a matching section), plot (a multiple choice section), vocabulary (a matching section and a fill-in-the-blank section) and theme (a short answer/essay section).
Remember to bring all work associated with The Crucible unit, especially your five-paragraph essay in which you make connections with one of the themes from the play. Bring your Brainstorming Guide for that paper, as well as any Strategic Reading and/or Literary Concepts: Theme handout.

Theme
Today's bellwork is here. To start the day, we each had a piece of fruit on our desks in front of us and wrote 1/2 page descriptions of the fruit, trying to use all five senses in the description. If you were absent, make this up by writing a 1/2 page description on something in your home.
Then we shifted our focus over to theme. We took a look at this powerpoint and read a story from The Kite Runner and discussed the story's theme.
Finally, we brainstormed some ideas for our short story from this guide.
3rd block also completed their homework assignment for today, which was to read any short story from East of the Web and complete this work for it.

Then we took a look at tone (or the author's attitude toward the subject). In groups, we read, three passages about childhood by Mark Twain and used this this guide to contrast their tone. Check out this file for copies of the three passages and some help understanding the lesson. Let me know if you have questions. Tone can be tough to grasp!

Mood
Today's bellwork is here. We discussed characterization in yesterday's assigned reading, The Things They Carried, and completed a creative writing activity that cannot be made up. We then went over mood according to this powerpoint. Finally, we read The Raven and identified its mood by listing several adjectives.

Characterization and Dialogue
For today's bellwork we made a list of interesting objects that we had in our bedrooms, one from each person in the class. From that list, we chose three objects and used those objects to describe a character. For example, what type of character would have ceramic penguin figurine, a gorilla costume and wrestling medals in their room or office? The point is to think creatively and use these concrete objects to characterize someone. Chose three interesting objects from around the house to get you going.
After this, we read Ernest Hemmingway's short story, Hills Like White Elephants, and answered these questions. If the story is confusing, try reading the Wikipedia page for some background and analysis of the story.
We also talked about the concept of in media res. Make sure you understand this for the test.
Finally, we took home Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried to read as homework. We will use this story in class tomorrow.

Characterization
Today's bellwork is here. We started the day with a grammar lesson on complete sentences. Then we read Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been by Joyce Carol Oates and discussed her use of characterization. Make sure you understand the concepts of characterization and of "showing, not telling."

Writing Strategies
Today's bellwork is here. We finished our work on the 20 plot structures and read an excerpt from Anne Lammott's Bird by Bird. We answered these questions that went along with the reading. Finally, we applied some of our creative writing skills by playing a game of Balderdash.

Plot
Today's bellwork is here. We finished our introduction speeches. Then we took notes from this powerpoint on plot. Then we read the Edgar Allen Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart and identified the five elements of plot for the story.
